Special Categories/Awards:
While all topics must fit the national theme, some topics might fit into special categories. These special categories can receive special prizes at the national competition in Washington D.C.

Special Awards State of Ohio
Case Western Reserve University Half Scholarship Juniors and Seniors can apply for the scholarship by writing a one-page essay stating your interest in and qualification for the award, one letter of support from a teacher or supervisor who is familiar with your academic work, and an official copy of your transcripts sent by your school to the address below. Students must participate in History Day and meet the Case Western Reserve University admission requirements.
The Society of Ohio Archivists Award Project must demonstrate exceptional research and use of primary sources to include at least two of the following: letters, speeches, diaries, newspaper articles from the time, oral history interviews, documents, photographs, artifacts, or anything else that provides a first hand account about a person or event.
History Day Project winners must have used primary resources on site at a research institution housing those materials. All primary sources must be cited accurately in the bibliography of the paper.
This award was initiated in 1999. Award recipients are given a certificate and a $100.00 cash award for a winner--individual or group--in both the Junior and Senior Divisions.
Local History Award Sponsored by the Ohio Local History Alliance for an outstanding entry based on a local history topic in the junior and senior division for $100.
Fan the Flame Award Two $100 awards will be given by the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center to an outstanding project focusing on an individual, a group or a movement that have contributed significantly to the advancement of freedoms and the assurance of the civil and human rights of others.
Chronicling America and Ohio Memory Digital Resources Award The Ohio History Connection would like to recognize an Ohio History Day project for exceptional research and use of primary sources available through Chronicling America and Ohio Memory in the development of their History Day project. Award recipients are given a certificate and a $100 cash award for the winner- individual or group- in both the Junior and Senior Divisions.
The African American History Award A $100 prize award to an outstanding project related to African American history sponsored by The Ohio State's Department of History.
The Ohio Council for Social Studies Award A $100 prize award to an outstanding project related to Ohio history.
The Ohio Historical Records Advisory Board Two $250 prize awards to recognize the best use of Ohio's historical records in a History Day project.
Women's History Award A $100 prize will be awarded to an outstanding entry related to women's history.
Ohio Academy of History Award An $100 award will be given to an outstanding documentary, website, or paper on a topic anywhere in the world outside of North America.
The American Founding Award A $250 prize will be awarded from the Ashbrook Center for Public Affairs to an excellent entry related to the study of the Declaration of Independence and/or the Constitution.
LGBT History Award A $$100 prize sponsored by the Gay Ohio History Initiative. This prize will be awarded to an outstanding project in the junior or senior division, in any category, focused on the history of the LGBT community on a national or state/local level.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum Award This award recognizes an outstanding project directly related to the history and/or influence of rock and roll (and related musical styles). This project must demonstrate exceptional rock history research, including primary sources.
