The benefits of doing NHD this year and into the future!
- It starts with giving students a broad annual theme. This year it’s Communication in History: The Key to Understanding.
- It Provide opportunities for students to find a topic of interest to them so that history can come alive.
- It gives them the hat of a detective and teaches them how to conduct historical inquiry. How to collect historical sources both primary and secondary.
- It gives them the hat of a scholar and the opportunity to analyze those sources, find historical context, and determine historical significance.
- Then it asks them to don the hat of a chef and creatively present their information in a method that best suits their topic and their tastes through one of five categories.
- When you give kids the opportunity to research, create, analyze, defend, and present a project of their choosing, they are doing history. They are making connections that enable them to learn and process so much more. This magic combination of teaching real world skills that are relatable down the road is a major factor in why students benefit from their NHD experience.
- When students have put their heart into their project and gave it their best efforts, what they have accomplished is nothing short of impressive, but what it ends up becoming for them many years down the road is nothing short of miraculous.
Though this is a time consuming undertaking, the academic and social skills you will acquire will help you succeed in high school and college. The creation and presentation of your project is an incredible experience for many students.
